Superannuation Industry Induction

Outline

This course introduces superannuation and the superannuation industry. The superannuation industry is an important and major component of the Australian financial services sector, and it is essential to understand the role it plays. Superannuation is also an important savings tool for all Australians’ retirement planning.

With an ageing population, there is an ever-increasing need to encourage people to at least partially fund their own retirement. The Australian superannuation industry continues to grow rapidly as Australia’s population is retiring earlier and living longer, which means that the cost of supporting retirees is increasing. The accumulation of sufficient funds to maintain a comfortable lifestyle on retirement is important as is the growing need for financial advice to maximise retirement outcomes. This is why the federal government incentivises people to save for retirement by providing contribution opportunities and various tax concessions within the superannuation system.

Superannuation is an investment vehicle governed by specific laws and we will explore how the superannuation industry is regulated.

It is also important to have a good understanding of the types of superannuation funds, how superannuation is structured and the rules and options for contributing to, investing in, and withdrawing funds from superannuation.
